I (do NOT) Heart Huckabees

Sigh… on Friday night after the Kellogg TG 2nd Annual Drag Show, 4 of us decide to grab a bite to eat and go to a movie. Being the big dork that I am, I had printed out the movie schedule for the one theater in town. Not wanting to wait around til the late shows, we decide to see I Heart Huckabees which was starting as we walked in.

OK. First of all… I went to engineering school. They don’t teach us what existentialism is. So, being the nerd that I am, I decide to look it up when I get home. I’ll share with you now incase you don’t know either: A philosophy that emphasizes the uniqueness and isolation of the individual experience in a hostile or indifferent universe, regards human existence as unexplainable, and stresses freedom of choice and responsibility for the consequences of one’s acts. Second of all… Jude Law is in this movie and he doesn’t take his shirt off - DAMN! And third… the mud scene? WTF? I could go on and on. Maybe if you were a philosophy major you’d think this movie was funny. For me… that was just 2 hours of my life that I can’t have back [pouts]. Jeff, did you like this movie??

Kellogg was ranked as Business Week’s #1 Business school again… woo hoo! So does it strike anyone else as being odd that there was a packed TG for the drag show in the atrium - and one of DH’s professors walked the runway strutting his stuff. Hmmm…deep thoughts.

Well, since I haven’t seen the movie I can’t comment on it. I’ve heard a lot of bad things about it but I still really want to see it and plan on doing so. Though I was not a philosophy major I am a big fan of existentialism in theater and literature so maybe I will like it.

Anyway, I will let you know what I think when I’ve watched the movie.

I finally went to see I Heart Huckabees and… I loved it! In my opinion it was very funny and really original. I think a lot of the critics who have dismissed it for being heavy-handed and overly philosophical are missing the point. The philosophies being preached by the competeing ‘detective’ agencies aren’t intended to be a lesson to the viewer - they are just the oppisite. The philosophical lessons are so overstated that they poke fun at the whole concept of anyone understanding these things. The movie isn’t about existential philosophy, it’s about individual people coming to terms with thier screwed up lives, which, frankly, is what most good movies are about.

Anyway, that’s just what I thought.
